Constitutional monarchies

I read the following on CBC News Online, for those who hate long LJ's I have done my best to LJ-cut it.

Constitutional monarchies

Canada's ties to the British throne are evident everywhere we look, from the Queen's portrait on our coins and stamps to the pomp and ceremony of our parliamentary system.

Canada is a constitutional monarchy and our head of state is Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada. But the Canadian Constitution limits her powers in government and the Queen is generally considered a figurehead leader only.

Some Canadians question the relevance of the Queen's position in Canada, in part because the nominal leader of Canada lives in another country and her position passes down to her descendants.

In a poll of Canadians taken in the spring of 2002, more than half of respondents thought the royal system was outdated. However, only 41 per cent believed it was time to abolish the monarchy, down from 47 per cent in 1994.

Even former Deputy Prime Minister John Manley suggested replacing the Queen with an elected head of state, while groups such as the Monarchist League of Canada fight any move away from the crown.

But Canada isn't unique in its system of government. Dozens of constitutional monarchies exist around the world. Most of them have their roots in England and are members of the Commonwealth.

Some of the Commonwealth countries, however, have a native monarchy. Lesotho gained independence from the U.K. in 1966 and now recognizes King Letsie III as its head of state. He is considered a "living symbol of national unity" and has no government powers.

Malaysia, another Commonwealth nation, has a "paramount ruler" as its head of state. The ruler is selected by and from a group of hereditary leaders representing nine of the country's 13 states. The ruler appoints senators and judges but has limited powers under the Malaysian constitution.

Some Commonwealth nations – such as Botswana, Fiji, India and South Africa – have removed the monarchy as part of their government, choosing instead to become republics and to select their own heads of state.

A strong republican movement in Australia led to a referendum in 1999. The Australians voted to retain the monarchy, but the republicans blamed their narrow defeat on the wording of the referendum question.

The question proposed that the president of an Australian republic would be chosen by parliament, not by a popular vote. Many republicans rejected this option and chose to stay with a constitutional monarchy.

The constitutional monarchies that exist outside the Commonwealth have monarchs with varying degrees of power.

KUWAIT
Kuwait appears to have a constitutional monarchy in name only. Both the country's prime minister and deputy prime minister are appointed by the emir. The cabinet is appointed by the prime minister from an elected National Assembly, but must be approved by the emir.

JAPAN
In Japan, the power exercised by the emperor has changed throughout the country's history. From the early 17th to the late 19th century, Japan was ruled by the shoguns, military rulers who passed their power down family lines.

The emperor was ostensibly returned to power in the 19th century following a political upheaval known as the Meiji Restoration. However, the real power rested with powerful families called the daimyo. Under the current constitution, the emperor is a "symbol of state" but holds very little power.

MONACO
The Principality of Monaco boasts that the House of Grimaldi has held the crown for 700 years. However, the rule of Monaco will revert to France if a male heir to the house is not born. The Monegasque monarch is head of state and may appoint a minister of state from a list of three candidates selected by the French government.

THAILAND
King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand holds the title of the world's longest reigning monarch, having held the throne since 1946. Even though the position holds very little power, Thais regard their king as a true royal symbol, a source of pride for the country.

All those Monarchies

Commonwealth Nations with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state Commonwealth nations with an indigenous monarchy Other constitutional monarchies
Antigua and Barbuda
Australia
Bahamas
Barbados
Belize
Canada
Grenada
Jamaica
New Zealand
Papua
Solomon Islands
St. Kitts-Nevis
St. Lucia
St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Tuvalu
U.K.
Samoa
Lesotho
Malaysia
Swaziland
Tonga
Bahrain
Belgium
Bhutan
Cambodia
Denmark
Japan
Jordan
Kuwait
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Monaco
Morocco
Nepal
Norway
Spain
Sweden
Thailand
The Netherlands

I have formed some questions. Does belonging to a monachy do anything Canada that we cannot do for ourselves? Would Canada die without the Queen? But can Canada be parted from the Queen without negative ramifications?

My Opinion the Queen has been slightly pulled out of our daily lives for many years. God Bless the Queen has been out of our school system for many years. I remember being under 10 when we didnt have to say it anymore.

I think Canada can be cut loose and should although I am no traitor to the throne. I just think the need for a figure head is not needed here. She (the Queen) can still be a part of Canada's legacy and future but to a smaller degree.

Ewing and Lopez as his wife Sue Ellen.

In a statement, Chadha said her appointment meant that the sort of South Asian-themed British films that made her name had "huge credibility and respect in Hollywood."

Chadha, who gave Jane Austen a Bollywood twist in last year's "Bride and Prejudice," is also involved with adapting another TV hit, 60s sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie." She said that film "is still in the pipeline, but there is still some way to go on the script."

Filming on "Dallas" is due to start in October, with the movie slated for a late 2007 release.

(enter rant here)

OHHH PLEASE, the remake engine is still trudging on spewing out more garbage. The originals were great back in the day but now too much camp not enough heart. The only tv series remake movies that have come out that have been some-what decent in my opinion have been the first Charlie’s Angels and the award for So-So was Dukes of Hazzard. The worst one award is a tie between I SPY and Starsky and Hutch. Both were Owen Wilson movies and everyone knows I cant stand him. Although Wedding Crashers was better then I thought it would be.

(/enter rant here)

Longtime letter-turner Vanna White gets her star

Updated Fri. Apr. 21 2006 8:47 AM ET

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- This time, it was Vanna White's turn to spell out a name - her own.

The longtime letter-turner on Wheel of Fortune was all smiles Thursday as she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. "I remember my parents telling me, at the age of 10: 'You can do anything you want."' "Dad, we did it!" said White, 49, who debuted as host Pat Sajak's assistant in 1982.

Guests at the 2,309th star's unveiling included Sajak, Wheel of Fortune creator Merv Griffin, Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek and White's father.

"I picked her because she knew the whole alphabet," Griffin said.

"She is America's sweetheart."

White grew up in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., studied to be a model and moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting.

She struck TV gold with Wheel of Fortune, clapping and turning letters called out by contestants.

(enter rant here)

In my little opinion and only in my opinion, why does she deserve this. I don’t see it. She turned over letters and later in the digital age, she touched screens to change it. This is here only claim to fame. There are better examples of ones who deserve it. Like Robin Williams, does he have one? He should.

(/enter rant here)

this was taken from CBC Arts

Gene Pitney, the American singer of such hits as Only Love Can Break a Heart and Twenty-Four Hours from Tulsa, has died at age 65.
Pitney, also known as the songwriter behind Hello Mary Lou and Rubber Ball, was found dead in his hotel room in Cardiff, Wales, Wednesday morning, having given a concert the previous evening.
According to police, his death does not appear suspicious.
"We don't have a cause of death at the moment but it looks like it was a very peaceful passing," said Pitney's tour manager, James Kelly.
"He was found fully clothed, on his back, as if he had gone for a lie-down. It looks as if there was no pain whatsoever.
"Last night was generally one of the happiest and most exuberant performances we've seen out of him," Kelly said. "He was absolutely on top of his game and was really happy with the show."
Pitney was born in Hartford, Conn., in 1941. He first found success as a songwriter, with Top 10 hits Rubber Ball, recorded by Bobby Vee, and Hello Mary Lou, recorded by Ricky Nelson.
In the early 1960s, he shot to fame as a singer with his own Top 10s, performing songs by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, including Liberty Valance, Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa, and Only Love Can Break a Heart, which was his biggest U.S. hit, peaking at No.2 on the charts in 1962. The No. 1 song at the time was the Crystals' He's a Rebel, which Pitney wrote.
Pitney had more than a dozen Top 40 hits in the U.S., and was in the Top 10 in Britain six times during the 1960s, returning to No. 1 there in 1990 with a re-recording of Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart, a duet with Marc Almond.
Pitney was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland in 2002.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
I myself was taken aback by this, some of you may not know that I am a lover of music from the 50s-60s. I do love that era and think of myself as a lover of all music.
Music in all its forms has a time and a place and a mood for it to be heard. Hello Mary Lou is one of the all time greats in my book. I have taken my moment to mourn this great person who made an impact in my life without really meeting me. May your songs live forever Gene and you will be immortal.

Hello Dear Bloggers and Welcome to my Post Ad Astra Report.

I showed up friday broke and hoped they would take credit card but no they didnt.

thanks to Grandpoobaa for offering to lend me the money but I dont care for borrowing very often.

I left half an hour later and went to a small gathering of friends.

After 2 hours of sleep I woke up the household and three of us went off by 10 am to do some stuff.

By 11 we had arrived at Ad Astra ready to have some fun.

Stumbled into the game room for an hour or so of playing a tile game Carcasonne,

My two friends after amusing them selves in various panels and such took off home to get into costume for the evening.

At around 2pm I myself departed to pick up my costume after very little prodding.

I made a mad dash home on the way eating a foot long tuna sub from Subway.

Repaired two seams on my costume and bagged it up.

Tried to make a mad dash back carrying a five foot long by 1 foot box covered in tattered garbages held together by lots of duct tape and prayers.

Got back by 430 pm. Put on my costume and walked around.

Damn Hotel had too many stairs to travel safely up and down in a very large Listerine bottle. I didnt get hurt at all but had one close call were I was teetering over the edge of stairs.

By 6pm I was in the green room with all the other Maskerade contestants, waiting to go on stage.

I had quite a good time waiting although it did go way too long with the waiting. We didnt go onto close to 9pm instead of promptly at 8

I went up on stage and had the largest and loudest crowd reaction of everyone.

Jake the MC and friend announced me:

"Most Kids at Halloween dress up as Superheroes, some as Superman, Some as Batman but no one wants to dress up as:"

I walk out in my Listerine Action hero Costume and acting bummed out. I thought the roof had been ripped off due to the yells, screams, whistles and applause

I then went back to the green room and took off my costume but I put it back on for awhile longer.

Went to a couple of the room parties. drank some and a great Montreal smoked meat sandwhich at the Montreal Anticapation party (for the Olympics 2009)

My Friend Seb had a great BAWLS party (Energy drink)

I also was in the smoking room (dont smoke but had fun anyways)

Was also in the Con Suite for some real cheap beer

Went back and forth from all of the above and the Dance.

AT 1130 pm they announced the winners

The overall winner was a great costume. This girl did good and she was sitting beside me in the green room and her had husband played Carcasonne earlier,

Her Costume was a tree and on one branch sat a very large cheshire cat from Alice in wonderland and the thing was freaky. it was cartoonish but looked alive. the mouth opened and closed with her hand.

I won the craftmanship award for best use of cardboard and glue. yesssss

beer at the dance was expensive. the hotel opened two bars outside of it and had beer for $6.

I then ended up spending the night sitting talking to people in the Bawls party to the early morning hours.

at about 7 we piled out of the room to find food and some found the pool. some found sleep

Breakfest was over expensive as always for a hotel buffet. dreadful pancakes made of sawdust like material. $18 bucks was way too much.

I left the hotel around 10am and went home and crashed about 11, I had been up for about 28 hours at this point with only 2 hours sleep before that after being up for 24 hours.

I woke up at 6pm to watch Battlestar Galactica and went back to sleep at 7pm I then woke up a few times but got up at 5am. to get ready for work.

monday was a blur, today was a blur

report over thank you for reading.
